Many schools throughout the United States are incorporating technology into everyday use in the classroom. California is becoming a leader in getting a law passed that will protect students information when they use technology. This law is getting put into place due to persistence form the parents and there worries about there children's personal information being made public. This information includes if a child has a disability, family problems, or problems with discipline, and this could effect the future careers and college career of the students. Also, the rise in technology means there is more apps and programs that students are using. These products range from a reading app that will record and assess a child's every click, online learning, and many more. Furthermore, these products are all data-driven products, and there are worries that the information on them can be seen or leaked out. The schools want to use these products, but the parents are still concerned about the security and privacy of these products. Moreover, there are thirty-six states have introduced legislation to protect the information of students, and thirty bills have been passed. "A federal law, the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, limits the disclosures of student education records by schools that receive public funding. But critics have long complained that the 40-year-old law, written for the file-cabinet era when student records were kept on paper, has not kept pace with digital data-mining." The California bill extends its protection to more than what the official student education record covers by federal law. This law stops companies from selling or using any information of the students online searches. “The bill sets a standard that is applicable to the larger privacy debate,” Mr. Steinberg said. “Personal information should only be used for other purposes with the permission of the individual.
In my opinion, this law is great law that has passed and will be used effective to protect students of California. I like that it prevents companies from using the student information no matter what the information was. As a future Special Education teacher , I will make sure that the students personal information is protected. Also, I will check with the school I work at to make sure that there is proper security measures that are being put into place. Moreover, I think that this article was informative on how I need to go about assigning online work in the future. I will make sure the products I use are secure, and protect my students information.
